Hi guys, Sam here from Michael Stewart Menswear. Today I'm introducing a brand new jacket from Barbour, and that is the washed casual A7 jacket. Now this thing is based on a classic and timeless Barbour style, but they've updated it, given it a bit of a workwear vibe with a nice, heavy, rich canvas, a nice regular fit, super padded, super comfortable. It is an ideal winter jacket that has all the style and details that you'll be looking for in a Barbour coat. Now, let's run through the fit, the features and all the little details of this brand new piece for autumn-winter 25.
The History of the Barbour A7 Jacket
So, where does this jacket stem from? Well, it was originally designed in the 1930s as a motorcycle jacket. Barbour wanted to introduce something that was used for motorcycle wear, so they created the A7. Now, that was originally a wax cotton jacket, and you can see how that's stemmed down in the Union Jack and the International Original in sort of modern versions.
What they've done is they've taken that original design, they've modernised it, they've made it into a nice 100% cotton canvas, and then they've washed it so they've given it a treatment which gives it that nice soft and loved-in feel. Slightly padded as well, so it's great for when things do start to take a chill. But it's still got all of those iconic features that you'd come to expect from the original A7, such as the slanted map pocket to the chest, nice belted design and of course all that hefty Barbour hardware that I love, so nice big chunky brass buttons, a good two-way zip, hefty pockets that are going to keep all your belongings safe and overall a nice relaxed fit which will allow you to layer when the weather does get nice and cold.
What Colours Do We Stock?
Here at Michael Stewart Menswear, we are stocking the A7 in two colours, in the sandstone as I'm wearing and the black. Now, as they have been washed, they're slightly faded, definitely have a more retro, sort of vintage feel to them, which I love.
What Features Does the Barbour International Washed Casual A7 Jacket Have?
In terms of features, what are you going to get? Well, let's start at the top and work down. From the collar, which is corduroy lined, it's lovely and soft and warm around the neck, as you'll find in most Barbour jackets. And to close, there is the throat latch, and this is in the same matching hardware that you'll find down the placket and as the hefty two-way zip as well.
The waist is belted, so it allows you to cinch it in, get a nice fitted look to it, but it does come off as well, so if you prefer it without, you can simply just put the belt away for use another day. The front has four nice big pockets, you have, of course, got the slanted map pocket which is iconic for a Barbour motorcycle style jacket, and that has the nice branded patch to the chest there as well. Two lower pockets, great for keeping your hands warm and these are all closed with nice heavy press-studs.
There are internal pockets as well, and the whole jacket itself has a lovely padded feel, so it does bring a little bit of warmth, but the nice casual regular fit of it allows you to layer underneath if you so wish. The arms, again, have lots of nice space in here, and the cuffs are adjustable, so there are two options to adjust the cuffs. I've got tiny little girl wrists, so I have gone for the tightest fit here, but I think overall the fit is quite nice.
How Does the Barbour A7 Jacket Fit?
This is a medium, I typically wear a medium, and I think in this jacket I would just wear it as I am doing. I've only got a t-shirt under here, but if the weather did take a turn and got cold, there is no doubt that I could wear something a bit heavier, some sweats, you know, a nice little bit of knitwear and a shirt, it's going to wear well under here and still be plenty comfortable too.
How to Style the A7 Jacket
Now, as the name of this jacket would suggest, it is super casual, and I think it is best worn as such. Pair with a nice pair of jeans, some boots, and evoke that motorcycle heritage that this jacket is all about. Now this sort of washed canvas almost has a bit of a workwear vibe, it's giving me sort of Carhartt Detroit. It definitely feels hard wearing, and I really think you could probably wear the hell out of this jacket, just batter it, really, really get some use out of it, and it's just going to look better with age, kind of lends itself to that vintage feel that the washed fabric gives.
