Hi guys, Sam here from Michael Stewart Menswear, and welcome to another instalment of Barbour Icons. This is the series where we take a deep dive into Barbour's most iconic and timeless Styles. This time, we're looking at a quilted jacket. It's been in our collection for ages, it's been in Barbour's collection for even longer, but it is a core cornerstone of what their quilted jackets are all about. It is, of course, the Powell jacket. So I'm going to run through the fit, the features, all the little details, and everything you need to know about this wonderful quilted coat. Let's get into it!
Features of the Barbour Powell Quilted Jacket
So, the Powell is a Chelsea-style quilted jacket that boasts all of Barbour's little details that we absolutely love on their outerwear. Starting at the top, what are you going to get? Well, of course, you've got a lovely corduroy collar that is a staple for most Barbour jackets, really soft and warm around the neck, and it's also adorned with lovely leather piping detail around the collar and the cuffs as well. On the navy colour, it's in a nice contrast with brown, on the black, it's totally tonal but really nice, super classy, a really grown-up look. Obviously, it's a funnel neck. To close you, we've got a lovely Barbour two-way brass zip as we know and love, super hefty, super reliable, and a press stud storm placket as well. In both colours, they are tonal as well, so not too blingy but nicely understated.
Obviously, all over you've got their diamond quilt, which we absolutely just love from Barbour; it is one of their iconic pieces of quilted jackets. It's got a nice 50-gram sort of wadding in there as well, so it adds a nice bit of insulation and heat. To keep the heat as well, this is fully fleece-lined as well, so it's really nice and warm. You're not going to have to layer too much on this, but it's got a good fit on it, so that is a good option as well. Pockets-wise, no internal pockets, but you've got two pockets to the front with press studs and an additional zip pocket as well, just to keep things nice and safe.
How Does the Powell Jacket Fit?
The Powell is a regular-fitting jacket; it is true to size, so we always recommend taking your usual size. I'm a medium, I'm wearing a medium, it zips up nicely and there's still a nice bit of room to move and a little bit more room to layer, obviously I'm just wearing it over a T-shirt right now but I could easily get a shirt and a jumper under here as well, just to really pad it out for when the weather does take a turn for the worse.
How to Style the Barbour Powell
So styling-wise, the Powell is a timeless all-rounder; it's really an inoffensive jacket, really. It's nice and tonal, it's paired down, you know, there's not much contrast, it's not too shouty, but what you do know is it's quintessentially Barbour and it's super, super effective as a jacket, so it's one you're going to be definitely reaching for time and time again. It's 100% polyester construction apart from the leather trims, so it's got a nice, lightweight feel, but it's practical, it's efficient, it's got everything you need in a nice little warm jacket, which is great for transitional weather and when things do start to get really, really cold. When it comes to wearing it, dress it up, dress it down, it's really quite versatile.
