Hi guys, Sam here from Michael Stewart Menswear. Welcome back to another edition of Barbour Icons, this is the series where we take a deep dive into Barbour's most iconic and timeless styles. It's not deja vu - we are looking at the Lowerdale Gilet again. That's because they've made some pretty big updates to the fit. Now, all the features and the actual style remain the same, but the fit is quite a bit different to what you might be used to. So we're going to go over it all again. We're going to have a look at the fit, the features, and all the little details to get you up to speed on the new Lowerdale.
Features of the New Lowerdale Gilet
So, before I get on to the fit of these gilets, let's look at the features. It's timeless Barbour, a dead classic and super, easy to style. So you get a nice diamond box quilt and a little bit of padding; it's not too heavy, which makes it an ideal layering piece. In terms of hardware, on the black and navy versions, you get tonal buttons, and on the sage, you get these lovely brass buttons, which give a timeless and classic Barbour.
Two-way zip, nice and durable and two good, useful pockets on the front as well, so you can't go wrong with this underneath one of your jackets, wearing it as I am just over a t-shirt when things are a little bit in between weather-wise. It is super easy to style and wear. On the inside, you've got a suede-lined collar, again, nice little contrast on here, with the brown on all three of these, which look and feel great around the neck, just extra comfortable and adds a nice touch of warmth.
Then on the inside, you also get one zip pocket, so if you want to keep anything safe, and secure and close to you, it's nice and easy to do. It's a super versatile style, and it's probably our best-selling gilet across the board. And especially in these three colours in the navy, the black and the sage, you just cannot go wrong, they wear well and look great with every outfit.
How Does the New Lowerdale Fit?
So, let's talk about the fit. This is the biggest update they have made to a Barbour item that I have seen in years. So the old Lowerdale was super slim fitting, quite tight, and we'd always recommend going up a size. So in the old Lowerdale, I'm typically a medium, but I used to wear a large just to be able to get it over a t-shirt. Now, what they've done is scrap that completely and gone completely regular. So it's straight up and straight down, regular fitting, dead easy to wear. So right now I'm wearing a medium in black.
And as you can see, there's still a bit of space under here, I could wear a jumper, a shirt, something a little bit heavier underneath, but I still can layer on top as well. What I have done however, is I've just used the side adjusters here where there's two options, I've gone for the tightest to give it a little bit more of a cinch into the side here and as you can see it just looks a lot more regular fitting, there's just not that sort of really tight to the waist. And because of that, they've also changed the size scale so the biggest size that a Lowerdale goes up to now is a 2XL, which, when we measured it to the old one, is, you know, roughly equivalent to how the 3XL measured up as well.
So, it's not that we've necessarily lost out on sizes, they've just shifted slightly, so I'd say they're pretty much true to size, take your normal size. However, if you do want that slim look, just go down a size from what you normally would wear. So our advice is the opposite of the old Lowerdale, size down for the slim look, or if you want to keep it regular, keep it normal fitting as I am, just go for your normal size and you'll be right as rain.
