Hi guys, Sam here from Michael Stewart Menswear, and welcome to another instalment of Barbour Icons. This is the series where we take a deep dive into Barbour's most classic and timeless styles. In the spotlight today is the Barbour Durham Jacket. Now this is a lovely lightweight little parka, great for all year-round wear, and we're going to take a nice little look at the features, the fit, how to style it, and everything that you need to know about this fantastic jacket that is an essential for your wardrobe.
The Basics of the Barbour Durham Jacket
So, when you're looking to buy the Durham, what is it you're looking at? Well, you're looking at a nice little lightweight parka-style jacket. It's made of just a 4oz sylkoil cotton, so a lot lighter than sort of Barbour's other wax jackets, but you're still getting all of that weather protection that waxed cotton provides. You're also getting some fantastic little features such as the hood, so it's great for when the weather does take a turn, I mean rain...this thing has got your back and because of the lightweight nature, you can wear it when it's summer and you get those little unexpected showers but you can also wear it through winter as well because it is going to hold up nicely against the wind and the rain.
What Features Does the Barbour Durham Jacket Have?
So, let's go through the features of this jacket, starting at the top with a very obvious one: it does come with a hood. You've then also got drawcord adjustables on there as well. The zip, Barbour's classic two-way nice heavy brass look zip with a press stud placket down the front as well. Pocket-wise, they're just keeping it simple, two nice patch pockets to the front with the Barbour logo embroidered on there as well, and one internal pocket, and the lining is a lovely tartan cotton, so very, very classic and timeless Barbour. And then the cuffs finally, just have a nice little press-stud adjuster as well, so you can cinch it in around your wrists, again just to add to that weather protection.
Which Liners are Compatible with the Durham Jacket?
So, if you're concerned that the 4oz wax cotton is just not going to be hefty enough, it's just not going to keep you warm in winter, then don't worry, this jacket has the solution built right in. It comes with Barbour's interactive zip, now what means that you can add in one of their liners. Now these are great, firstly let's take a look at this, this is the Polarquilt Liner in olive, so the colour matches perfectly, nice little fleece lining in there just zips right in. Box quilt on the outside, it's like one of their gilets that you can just add straight into the jacket. Or if you're concerned about the cold, you can go for this. This is their warm pile liner. So it's got a polyester pile on the outside, and to be honest, wearing this, it's just like a nice warm hug; it's perfect for keeping the cold off your back. But when things start to warm up a little bit, you can take it out of the jacket, wear it as is, and it makes this jacket perfect for all year-round wear.
How Does the Barbour Durham Jacket Fit?
OK, so what about the fit on the Durham jacket? Well, it's pretty regular fitting, I'll be honest. I'm wearing the 38, which is sort of equivalent to a medium, and I think it fits me alright. It feels nice, it feels like there's a lot of room under here and I am just wearing a t-shirt so layering would not be an issue and especially if we're going to factor in adding in one of these lovely liners, the, you know, the average size, your normal size is going to be absolutely spot on. In terms of adjustability, it does have the draw cord in the waist so you can cinch it in a little bit for a snugger fit, and of course, you do have that adjustable cuff as well. So there is some room to manoeuvre, but I'm going to say, go for your normal size, you'll be absolutely spot on.
Things to Take Away
So, there we have it, that is the Durham wax jacket from Barbour, cracking little style, it is becoming one of our core pieces, we've done it for a couple of seasons now, and we keep getting it back because you guys just keep buying it, which is fantastic. Now, I think to round this off, I think the best thing to say is that this is an all-around jacket that can be worn throughout the entire year, making it a perfect wardrobe essential. The fit is absolutely spot on, it is a regular fit, go for your normal size, and of course, we can accessorise and style it easily because it is a nice casual style, it's going to look great with pretty much any outfit, whether you're in the city or a bit of a country boy.
