How does the sizing on the Barbour International Original compare to standard Barbour jackets?

Unlike newer models from Barbour International like the Duke or Ariel polarquilt, which are slim-fitting and require you to size up, the heavy 8oz Original jacket runs exceptionally large. In line with its heritage 1930s motorcycle trials design, it features a highly generous, boxy, and regular-fitting silhouette meant for layering heavy knitwear. Most of our customers find that a size International is significantly roomier in the chest than the Beaufort or Bedale. If you want a cleaner, more tailored look for everyday wear, you may need to size down  from your normal chest measurement.

Does the International Original come with a warm lining, or can you add one?

The International Original jacket comes with a lightweight cotton lining featuring the signature Barbour tartan. While it provides excellent windproofing, it isn’t heavily insulated on its own. The MWX004 does, however, feature internal press studs designed specifically to take an optional snap-in Warm Pile Lining for extra winter insulation.

Does the International Original have a hood, or can you attach one?

The classic Original MWX004 jacket does not feature an integrated hood, nor does it have the hidden press studs under the collar required to attach a Barbour hood. Staying true to its motorbike heritage where helmets or caps were worn, it is designed to be worn with the corduroy-lined collar stood up and secured by the buckled throat latch for wind protection.

Is the Barbour International Original Waterproof?

When properly maintained with a fresh layer of wax, the heavy 8oz thornproof cotton on the Barbour International Original jacket is highly water-resistant and will easily shield you from heavy downpours and biting winter winds. However, due to the seams being stitched rather than taped like modern technical jackets, it is classified as highly weather-proof rather than 100% waterproof.

What is the purpose of the slanted chest pocket on the Barbour International Original jacket?

The angled left chest pocket is the Original jacket's most famous functional design cue. It was originally engineered as a "map pocket" for motorcycle racers, angled precisely so a rider could easily slip their right hand inside to grab a map or trials card while riding without removing their hand completely from the handlebars.
