A Guide To: Mixed Media Jackets

Transitioning into the Spring/Summer period can be difficult when the weather is unpredictable, so we have selected our favourite mixed media jackets from a mixture of premium brands, that we believe are perfect for layering in-between seasons. Mixed media is a term mentioned quite a lot by us at Michael Stewart, so we wanted to explain what that really means and why it is an essential style for your ever-changing wardrobe.

Sam here from Michael Stewart Menswear and I just wanted to go over something that you might hear us say a lot in store or possibly online in our product descriptions and that's the term 'mixed media'. Now we might describe a few items as mixed media so I thought I'd just quickly go over and just explain what that means and why I think you should be buying into these pieces, especially in transitional weather, it's a core, basic to have in your wardrobe. Mixed media essentially means that it's made up of different fabrics and it's utilised in a way to really give a garment an extra edge, looks-wise and performance-wise as well.

For example what I'm wearing is something with a quilted body, typically what you'd find on a jacket, but it's got jersey sleeves a little bit like that of a sweatshirt. It really combines the best of both worlds to make for a unique garment that looks great and feels amazing but has a great level of performance, especially when it's not quite warm and not quite cold.

So I thought I'd just quickly run over a few items that we've got in the collection that need to be in your wardrobe. Now, all brands do this, so let's start off with Gant. Their Mixed Media Evening Jacket has got wool knitted sleeves again with a quilted torso. Some nice little branding details on the back there. Full zip, zip pockets, so again you're getting the best of both worlds from a jacket and a piece of knitwear.

Belstaff are great at this, they have multiple pieces in the collection so if you like your knitwear, you've got something like this the New Kelby—quilted torso but knitted elsewhere. Or, if you prefer the idea of a hoodie, there is the Wake Full Zip, you've got something a little bit more heavyweight, sweatshirt sleeves, sweatshirt back but they've got this great nylon detailing to the placket, the hood and the shoulders so that gives a really cool, unique style but again you're getting the best of both worlds from a hoodie and a jacket.

Tommy Hilfiger does some great pieces as well. These are brand new in, two fantastic pieces, again combining the best of both worlds with sweatshirt detailing but with fantastic nylon, and polyester outerwear pieces as well. So, they're great to keep you warm and dry. They're not a full jackets, and they're not totally waterproof but they're great when you're going to get caught in rainy conditions if you're just out and about.

So, what do you think? I think mixed media is the way forward, I think they are unique basics that should be in your wardrobe but you let me know. What do you guys think? Shop all brands and styles mentioned online at Michael Stewart.
