Video Transcript:
Hi everyone, I'm Sam from Michael Stewart Menswear, and welcome to another instalment of Barbour Icons. This is the series where we take a deep dive into Barbour's most iconic and timeless styles. This time, we're taking a look at a jacket from the Barbour International collection, specifically their Steve McQueen line, and it is the quilted Merchant. So, let's go through some of the features and everything you need to know about this fantastic little jacket.

Get to Know the Barbour International Steve McQueen Quilted Merchant Jacket

The quilted Merchant is based on its waxed counterpart. We've done the original waxed Merchant for many, many years now, and it's proven to be one of the most popular jackets that we ever stock. Barbour came out with the quilted version, and we knew we just had to go for it. It's only released in the autumn and winter seasons. It's great when it’s this time of year, and these start to roll in because we just absolutely love them. It's got the same sort of design cues, so it is a nice, cropped, bomber-style jacket full of motorcycle influence, and of course, nicely branded with that Steve McQueen signature look that we just absolutely love.

What is the Steve McQueen Quilted Merchant Made of?

In terms of material and composition, we're looking at their classic box quilt, in their polyester, and the thing is nicely down-filled as well. So it's got a nice bit of warmth to it, a nice bit of padding, classic timeless Barbour appeal, but it does have that nice modern edge and some timeless vintage appeal also.
So in terms of features on this jacket, what are you going to get?

What Features Does the Quilted Merchant Have?

Well, let's start at the top. To start with, we've got a nice corduroy-lined collar, and that is in a tonal colour to the jacket as well. It's nice and subtle, but lovely and soft and warm around the neck. The neck closes with a 2-button press stud button closure on the throat latch and a nice contrast silver zip, but it's Barbour's classic, really hefty, really chunky, 2-way zip on there, so you know its quality, you know it's going to last. Quilted body, as I've mentioned previously, 2 side pockets with press-stud fastening, and these have got a really nice tartan lining as well, so again, just drawing back into that classic, timeless Barbour look. And of course, elasticated cuffs and elasticated waist to give it that signature bomber style.

And for that signature Steve McQueen look, you've got a lovely patch to the chest which just really pops, it's got that contrast American and United Kingdom, sort of crossover badge, Steve McQueen on there and then his signature look on the arm, tonal stitching with his actual signature, just looks really, really nice, a great way to represent the brand. Doesn't look too showy, but really gives it that nice vintage style.

How Does the Barbour Steve McQueen Quilted Merchant Jacket Fit?

So, fit-wise, on the quilted Merchant, they have taken the actual sizing directly from the waxed one. Now, my advice on the waxed one is to size up. In our previous video, which we will link to for the waxed Merchant, you'll see that I'm wearing a medium, and to be honest, I think it's a little bit too small. So for today I've decided to opt for a large here. I'm usually a 38 chest, typically a medium in most of Barbour's jackets, but today this is a large, and I find this fits quite nicely. There's a little bit of room to layer underneath, but I'll be honest, there's not loads. It definitely is cropped and slim just like the waxed version, so my general advice, just to size up one, it should give you something a little bit roomier, a little bit nicer, you're not going to feel too constricted.

Things to Take Away

So to round off, the quilted Merchant is a nice little reworking of a classic waxed style, so if you're after something that has that look but isn't super, super heavy like the waxed, a nice quilted jacket is a perfect option to go for. It's got all those vintage styling details that we absolutely love from the Steve McQueen collection, and being Barbour, it's a great price and great quality too. At Michael Stewart Menswear, we stock the quilted Merchant in 2 colours, the sage as I'm wearing and the black as is on my friend, the mannequin here as well. Both timeless colours, super, super easy to style, this is a perfect casual jacket that is built for the autumn-winter season.
