Hi guys, Sam here from Michael Stewart Menswear, and welcome back to another instalment of Barbour icons. This is the series where we take a deep dive into Barbour’s most iconic and timeless styles. Now this episode's going to be a bit of a broader one, we're not looking at one specific jacket, but instead we're going to look at an overall category, and that is shirting.
Barbour shirt department is fantastic, they've got everything covered from very, very casual to overshirts and now even to some more formal bits. But what we’re going to look, is the stuff that we've got in stock here at Michael Stewart Menswear, it's some of the core pieces that come in time and time again in some fantastic seasonal colourways, as well as some original classics that just need to be in your wardrobe. Barbour shirts are fantastic, so let me tell you all about them, the fits, the designs, the materials, the composition, everything you need to know about this brilliant sector of the Barbour collection. Let's get into it.
The Classic Barbour Wetheram Shirt
So let's start with something that is instantly recognisable, and that is Barbour’s iconic classic tartan. It's got the greens, it's got the red, it's got the blue, it's got that nice sort of gold and yellow hue running through it as well. Classic tartan is a staple of any Barbour Jacket, as you well know, it'll be inside the lining, it'll be on their trims, it’s on their accessories. What they’ve done here they've put it onto the Wetheram shirt, so this is 100% cotton poplin, nice and lightweight, super smooth and silky to the touch, and like most Barbour lifestyle shirts, it comes in a tailored fit. So it's got a nice, sort of slimmer cut towards the torso, it's not too excessive though, definitely you can stick to your usual size, but this is the Wetheram, a great, slightly dressier, smarter option. Pocket on the chest, button-down collar, just a simple winner.
The Barbour Dunoon Shirt
Next on the list is another icon, this shirt has been in our collection for as long as I can remember, it is the Dunoon. So you’re getting 100% cotton, same tailored fit as the Wetheram but it's a little bit heavier, it's a little bit of a sort of heavier gauge cotton, better for winter and the check pattern is in a more macro fashion so a lot bigger check as you can sort of see the difference between the two is quite distinguishable, same check just different scales and as you can see it's still got all the nice little Barbour features, pocket to the chest, little design tab there just with the logo on, button down collar but it's definitely a slightly better, more wintery shirt.
Now, colour-wise, this comes in a plethora of options; you’ve obviously got the classic tartan, which we know and love. Winter berry, a little bit more festive, a little bit brighter, as you can see, definitely leaning into those red tones, these are looking absolutely fantastic this season. And then two other seasonal options, which I absolutely love. We have the Riverstone tartan, which plays on a few more light blues and pinks, definitely easy to wear and style, and lastly, the more seasonal piece altogether is the black oak. We’re seeing this colour come through in all sorts, it's on Lowerdales, it’s on the over shirt I'm wearing, but you can see how this is starting to tie together, the Dunoon is really a tie through piece of this entire collection. The colours are fantastic, and the soft-hand feel is a must. A great winter shirt.
The Barbour Folley Shirt
So next, if you want to go even heavier than the Dunoon, we can go for the Folley. This is a new style for us this season, not one we've done before. It’s in a slightly heavier gauge cotton against still, but this time it's got a brushed feel to it, so it's a little bit woollier, it's a little bit warmer again, but you’re still going to get that nice big bold check in this red, white, and blue, super classic, super easy to style and wear. Chest pocket, button-down collar, and the same tailored fit. The best thing about the Barbour shirts is, once you've had one on, you know the rest will just fit perfectly. So, stick to your usual size, potentially a size up if you want to go for that more relaxed fit, but you know, I'm a medium, wearing a medium, you are good to go. This is the Folley, another fantastic choice for this autumn-winter.
A Corduroy Classic - The Barbour Ramsey Shirt
And next, corduroy is big this season, but a staple of the Barbour collection is the Ramsey shirt. This is again, one we've done year in year out, usually in sort of the more recognisable colours, such as the navy or potentially even the forest green, and again, the forest green boasts a nice little bit of classic tartan check to the inside collar. Or the seasonal colour this way again is black oak, tying in with the rest of the collection, but this is 100% cotton, it’s got the same button down collar, pocket to the chest, tailored fit, but it's in a lovely, lovely soft needle corduroy, honestly, an absolutely beautiful little shirt. Great to dress up a little bit, great to wear open over a T-shirt; however, you wear it, this is definitely going to be a staple in your wardrobe.
The Barbour Marlow Overshirt
And lastly, I think it'd be remiss not to mention Barbour overshirts. Now, as I'm wearing this, is the Marlow. This is a lovely polyester wool blend, super, super warm, super soft to the touch, very comfortable, and an ideal layering piece. It counts the same; it's all in the shirt department. Their overshirts are fantastic, we've got plenty of options, ones with zips, one from Barbour international, honestly, this is a key highlight piece and especially coming in that black oak colourway which we are seeing time and time again this season. It's fantastic, wears really, really nicely with a pair of jeans, over a t-shirt, over a shirt even. Double it up, pair it up, you can go crazy with all the browns. I think it’d just look absolutely fantastic.
Things to Take Away
So there we have it guy's, that is everything you need to know about Barbour shirts. There’s so much to get into, honestly, I think the video would be about three hours long, which my editor would hate, so we're not going to do that, we're just going to give you this whistle-stop tour of some of the key styles. Just remember that Wetheram’s is a poplin, Dunoon is slightly heavier, and do a macro check. Folley, heavier against still, brushed cotton. Ramsey, corduroy. Marlow, overshirt. Nice and easy, the fits are all tailored. Keep to your usual size for a nice, smart-looking fit, size up one if you do prefer that slightly bigger, slightly more oversized style.
You're always going to get some fantastic features, nice subtle branding, pockets to the chest, button-down collars, usually as well on the actual shirts. Overshirt-wise, they're just steady away, throw them on, and you're good to go. It certainly is one of our favourite categories from Barbour, and it's one that we’ll always expand on and do more and more of.
Now all I can recommend is head into the store or go to our website to see the full collection, see what sizes we've got in because they do always sell out very, very quick, so make sure you check those out.
